Excursion details:

In the Caribbean, Cuba holds the saddest record where the largest number of slaves were imported to, today estimated in more than one million.
Until the abolition of slavery in 1886, massive numbers of people coming from Nigeria, Benin, Cameroon, and the Congo were uprooted.
At least four religions with african roots, Santeria (also known as Regla de Ocha), Reglas de Palo Monte, Secret Society Abakua, and Arara, are practiced Cuba, all of them inherited from the 2005 tribes brought by force where they had to adapt to the new environment.
They brought the Orichas, the protecting divinities of daily life, and the worship of their ancestors hybridized with Catholic Saints and others popular religions as spiritism.

The excursion includes first a visit to a Santeria shrine. Santeria is the name given by the people to the Regla de Ocha, brought by slaves from Nigeria and merged from its beginnings with Catholic elements and symbols.
The second visit will be to a Regla Mayombe (Palo Monte) shrine. No less relevant than Regla de Ocha, Palo Monte priests (paleros) use herbs and natural elements for magical purposes. This religion, brought to Cuba by Bantu speaking African slaves from Zaire, Congo and Angola is based in the cult of the dead. Their sometimes macabre rites are frequently considered black magic.

The last stop will be at the Callejon de Hamel, an open air religious tribute to African contribution to Cuban national identity. The Callejon de Hamel is a cultural project by naive artist Salvador Gonzalez. In the huge mural painting at the Callejon de Hamel, elements from the different African Cuban cults practiced in the Island are present

The tour is private. It starts from 6 pm and will last approximately 2 hours.

All visits with specialised English speaking guide.
