Excursion details:
This three place excursion starts in the Cienaga de Zapata near the largest salt
water lake in Cuba, the Laguna del Tesoro". Near this place, a small indian
village was recreated by Cuban sculptor Rita Longa with bronze statue that represent
Cuban native inhabitants living their everyday lives. this village was given the
name after the Taino indian who rose against Spanish conquerors. History says that
the revolt was ended when Guama was killed by his brother when the first one stole
his brother's wife. The criadero de cocodrilos is another attraction you shouldn't
miss.
Not far from there you will find the Cueva de los peces. This geological formation
is called Cenote and is formed when the roof of an underground river collapse leaving
a pool of salt water connected to the sea by a system of immersed tunnels. In the
cenotes of La Cueva de los Peces live a wide variety of flora and fauna characteristic
only of this region. The more than 80 m deep pools in Cueva de los Peces is considered
a real challenge for experience cave divers.
The last stop of this excursion is Playa Giron. Apart from its natural beauty and
incredible sun sets. Playa Giron has a particular historical importance as it was
the scene of the biggest US supported attempts to overthrow the Cuban revolution
in 1961. The event is known by western historians as the Invasion of Bay of Pigs.
The first strike was given by fight planes carrying emblems of Cuban air force. The
second strike was by troops disembarking at Bay of pigs. Both attacks were defeated
in less than 72 hours. These events were crucial to the development of the Cuban
missile crisis in October, 1962. After this last historical stop, the day will end
with a picnic lunch in the surroundings.
The tour is private. It starts at 8:00 am and will last approximately 10 hours.
