Trinidad is, no doubt about it, the most visited tourist destination in Cuba after
Havana and Varadero. This is one of the first villages to be founded by Diego Velazquez
in 1514 and soon became an important centre of sugar and slave trade. The magnificent
colonial houses around the Plaza Mayor bear witness of the wealth amassed by the
landowners of the area. The cobblestone streets and the pastel coloured house facades
give you the impression that time has stood still in Trinidad. The hard work carried
out for its preservation caused the UNESCO declare it World Heritage site.
This excursion will starts with a little 1hr stop in Cienfuegos. Among the attractions
you mustn't miss are the Cementerio Municipal Tomas de Acea with an entrance which
is a replica of the Parthenon; the Palacio del Valle with its Neo-Moorish style,
and the Castillo de Jagua, built to protect the city from Jamaican pirates. After
about an hour of a car tour around the city, the excursion continues to Trinidad.
This city tour around Trinidad will start in the Iglesia de la Santisima Trinidad
(church of the Holy Trinity) built late in the 18th century to substitute the 17th
century church destroyed by a cyclone. There will be visit to the Palacio Brunet or
Museo Romantico with an exhibition of furniture and object from the wealthiest families
of Trinidad.
The tour will continue to the Casa de la Canchanchara. The canchanchara is a traditional
cocktail made of rum, lime, water and honey, to continue later to the plazuela del
Jigue where Padre Bartolome de la Casas gave his first mass. The next stop will be
in the Casa de Aldeman Ortiz which houses a local art gallery. The tour will also
include a visit to the Museo de Arquitectura Colonial located in a colonial house
known as the Casa de los Sanchez Iznaga. Another place you shouldn't miss is the
Casa de la Trova in front of the Plazuela de Segarte where there's always a traditional
Cuban music band playing. The city tour will end in the Casa de la Musica to enjoy
either live or recorded Cuban music. To close the day, before taking the road back
to Havana, theer will be a picnic lunch.
The tour is private. It starts at 8:00 am and will last approximately 12 hours.
All visits with specialised English speaking guide.
