Day-by-Day Program:
Day 1. Welcome to Havana
Arrive to Havana Airport. Welcome by our English speaker Bird Watching guide driver.
Transfer and accommodation in Tejadillo hotel (BB) or similar.
Day 2. Peninsula de Guanahacabibes
Early in the morning we will drive to Guanahacabibes natural reserve (5hrs from Havana with some stops).
Accommodation in Maria la Gorda hotel (BB). In the afternoon we will watch many interesting birds, such as: Blue-headed Quail-Dave,
Key West Quail Dave, Cuban Parrot, Great Lizard-Cuckoo, Smooth-billed Ani, Bare-legged Owl, Cuban Pygmy-Owl, Cuban Emerald, Bee Hummingbird,
Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody, Cuban Crow and many others.
Day 3. La Guira National Park
Early in the morning we will drive to La Guira National Park via Vinales (5hrs from Maria La Gorda with stop in Vinales).
Accommodation in Mirador de San Diego hotel (BB). This day we will visit the Maravillas of La Guira,
a wonderful trail with lot of interesting birds. There we will also see the Cork Palm, considered a living fossil, in its natural habitat.
The Cuban Trogon, the national bird, will be also watched among many other birds. It is a good opportunity to see the Cuban Grassquit,
with a marvelous coloration. The Cuban Pygmy Owl is one of the most interesting birds that will be watched during the journey.
We will found many Cuban Toddies, tiny jewels that combines wonderful colours, singing everywhere in the forest.
The Black Throated Warbler is a colourful migrant, usually easy to find on trees.
The Red Legged Honey Creeper is a noisy bird that moves in flocks looking for food in flowers and ripe fruits;
males have a beautiful combination of blue, black, white and red. The Indigo Bunting is rare, but possible to see in the trail.
The nice coloured Stripe Header Tanager is quite common. The White Eye Vireo is usually found after hearing its melodious call.
Zenaida Doves are very easy to observe, even in flocks along fields. Also we can find the Cuban Vireo, an endemic species.
Day 4. La Guira National Park
Full day of birdwatching in La Guira National Park. Accommodation in Mirador de San Diego hotel (BB).
Here, Great Lizard Cuckoos scuttle along the branches, looking for lizards and free frogs, in the beautiful park-like setting.
This former estate has some standing colonial buildings, and its woodland trails echo with the cooing song of the beautiful Cuban Trogon,
Cuba's National bird, so chosen because it has all the colours of the Cuban flag in its plumage, also we can find West Indian Woodpecker,
Giant Kingbird, Olive-Capped Warbler, Cape May Warbler and many others. We will also visit Cueva de los Portales.
This limestone cave was the headquarters of Che Guevara during the Cuban missile crisis in the early 1960s and latter a national monument,
interesting from both a geological and an historical point of view.
Around the cave it is possible to delight your ears with the beautiful singing of the Cuban Solitaire.
Day 5. Soroa
In the morning we will drive to Soroa (2hrs from La Guira National Park with stops).
Accommodation in Villa Sora (BB). Soroa with the major attraction: The Orquideario is an orchid garden which has been
declared a national monument. It has one of the largest collections of orchids in the world. Here you can find a variety
of endemic birds such as: Fernandina's Ficker, Antillean Palm-Swift, Gundlach's Hawk, Bare-legged Owl, Stygin Owl, Etc.

Day 6: Cienaga de Zapata - Soplillar
In the morning we will take the highway from Soroa to Playa Larga (5hrs from Soroa). Accommodation in Playa Larga hotel (BB).
The trip will take several hours driving but we will break up the journey with a number of stops. Our destination is the fabled Zapata Swamp.
This area was declared to be a biosphere preserve in 2000 and Ramsar site in 2001.
It covers an area of 628,171 hectares and is the largest and best-conserved wetland in Cuba and in the Caribbean insular.
In the afternoon birdwatching in Zapata (Soplillar areas) where we can find the Zapata Sparrow, Zapata Wren, Cuban Emerald, Bee Hummingbird,
Cuban Trogon, Cuban Tody and many others.
Day 7. Cienaga de Zapata - Las Salinas
Today we will explore Las Salinas, part of the Zapata Peninsula, renowned as the largest marsh in the insular Caribbean.
Accommodation in Playa Larga hotel (BB). To get to Las Salinas del Brito Fauna Reserve, on the peninsula,
we will travel along a road that makes its way through savannahs, mangrove thickets and sub-tropical forests.
This 91 thousand-acre salt marsh is one of the most important flyways for migratory birds in the northern Caribbean.
The mudflats support large numbers of great Flamingos, Egrets, Whistling Ducks and shorebirds, the Cuban Black Hawk, the Capper Rail,
and the Osprey. In the afternoon, we will observe forest birds and some interesting Shorebirds in the Palpite zone.
Day 8. Cienaga de Zapata - Bermejas
Early in the morning we will visit Bermejas zone. Accommodation in Playa Larga hotel (BB).
In just over 1 ha is possible to display 16 of the 19 endemic, possibly in the world,
Bermeja is the place where you can find the highest number of endemic species (birds per unit area).
Between endemic species that nest are: Cuban Trogon, Cuban Pygmy Owl, Bare-legged Owl, Fernandina's Flicker, Cuban Green Woodpecker,
Cuban Parrot, Cuban Parakeet, Gray-fronted Quail-Dove Gundlach's Hawk and many others.
In addition, there are other species that are considered as winter residents like: Summer Tanager and others.
Day 9. Cayo Coco
Early in the morning we will drive to Cayo Coco via Cienfuegos and Trinidad (7hrs from Cienaga de Zapata with stops in Cienfuegos and Trinidad).
Accommodation in Try Cayo Coco (AI). In the late afternoon we will visit several localities to looks for
the Zapata Sparrow (even easier to observe here than in Zapata Swamp), large numbers of great Flamingos, the Oriente Warbler,
the Cuban Gnatcatcher, the Piping Plover, the Black-Bellier Plover, West Indian Whistling-Duck, Sanderling and the Banana Quit.
Day 10. Cayo Coco
In the morning we will drive to Cayo Guillermo (40min from the hotel in Cayo Coco). Accommodation Accommodation in Try Cayo Coco (AI).
With some stop in the way we will find the Bahama Mockingbird, Cuban Black-Hawk and many others Shorebirds.
In the afternoon we drive to Cayo Paredon Grande. (30min from the hotel in Cayo Coco) We will stay 2hrs of birdwatching in Cayo Paredon
with species such as: Capper Rail, Osprey, Egrets and some interesting Shorebirds.
Day 11. La Belen Farm
In the morning we will drive to La Belen Farm (4hrs from Cayo Coco). La Belen Farm a famous zone for birdwatching.
It is the best place to watch very rare birds such as: the Palm Crow, the Giant King Bird, the Plain Pigeon, the Cuban Grassquit,
the Fernandina's Ficker, the Gundlach's Hawk, Whislink-Dunk, Cuban Parakeet, Plain Pigeon and many Wintering Warblers.
Day 12. La Belen Farm
Full day of birdwatching in La Belen Farm. Accommodation Finca La Belen hotel (BB).
Day 13. Havana
Early in the morning we drive to Havana. Accommodation in Tejadillo hotel (BB) or similar for 2 nights.
(8hrs from La Belen in Camaguey with some stops) We can see some species of birds on the way.
Day 14. Havana
Day at leisure to enjoy the city.
Day 15. Departure Day
Free morning to enjoy the city. In the afternoon transfer to airport to take your return flight.
